Retreview: System Shock 2

System Shock 2 is many things. It's 13 years old now, a teenager. It's the spiritual predecessor to Bioshock. It was described as "[one of the] twin barrels of modern FPS innovation," by Sid Shuman of GamePro, the other of course being Deus Ex. It is also the subject of the first Retreview.

We had our ONE THOUSANDTH page view over night, good work everyone and I hope you've enjoyed it all so far.

We've been running for just over a month now and I've been considering what would make it worthwhile to go back and play some of these old games. I mean, there are a LOT of games out there, hundreds of new ones come out each year, on different platforms and for different audiences.

Hello!

I've been mentally scarred by System Shock 2. I attribute the crash of my harddrive to my computer having mercy for my mental state and shuttign down all attempts to play that game.

Thuaners, I'll play it again soon and Log 3 will hopefully be successful.

A Toys Story

A bit of an aside today.

I say a bit but I believe (with all my planning and future sight) that this will be a long, involved post.

I'll say in part this is inspired by Thuaners recent replies; that he enjoys reading what is written here and said thanks. Thank you Thuaners. I wondered then, why do I write. I enjoy it, someone else commented that I have a knack for writing the way I do; I know I write to entertain and for the enjoyment of others.

Log 2: Von Braun or not to Von Braun

To be perfectly honest, I knew that as soon as I put up a deadline at the end of my last post, I'd break it.

I feel bad about it, but it won't be the last time I get preoccupied....

...though I hope it's the last time my HDD dies.

So I revisited the Von Braun, I pumped myself up with a more educated build. It was very much a "round 2" type scenario. I thought it would be easy from here.

It's been a long week!

I started System Shock, it's damn hard. In a large number of ways it reminds me of when I first started playing Deus Ex (that was in 2003 I believe) and it was the first time I'd played a game with guns where I wasn't supposed to shoot everyone.

Let's keep it brief today and give you some updates this week.

Diablo 3 has been great; I love killing the butcher. I hate that it's the best way to get gear and it harks back to what killed WoW for me; repetition for the sake of repetition. It was a bit of a shock to realise that I'd been lulled back into the gear farming trap that absorbed so much of first year uni.
